All who break God’s law are in need of a savior, Jesus.
Why do I need a savior?
Every time we sin, we are raking up debt. When we charge something to our credit card, we are occurring debt. Debt never goes unpaid. One day, as we all know, we will have to pay every dollar we owe. The credit lender will never say, “it’s ok,” you don’t have to pay for all the things you bought. It works the same way in the spiritual. God is the record keeper of everything we do. We don’t get away with anything.
Imagine, right now, every single thing you have ever done wrong was recorded. Now, imagine if I had them written on paper, and read them out loud? What would you do?
One day, you will stand before the one who made you, who is all powerful, and all knowing, and He will judge all you have done, Scary right? What will you say? If you’re like me, you have racked up a pretty big debt with God, and you can’t pay the bill. Every time we sin, we rack up a debt that must be paid for. It doesn’t just disappear. When caught breaking the law, we go to a physical court, and plead not guilty when charged to receive mercy from the judge, and a lesser charge. Never does the judge say, “Oh you’re fine, don’t worry about your wrong doing.”
No, we have a law that we must follow. When we break the law, we pay the price.
We all have broken the law but we haven’t been caught every time. When we die, every time we did anything against God, any law of His we ever broke, will be revealed. What will you say? With God as your ultimate judge, how will you plead? Let’s look at God’s laws.
Thou shalt have no other gods before me
Honor thy father and thy mother
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain
Thou shalt not commit adultery
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor
I know I have broken every single one. By the way, the bible says if we even break one, it’s equal to breaking them all. James 2:10 says, “For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.” God judges all sin the same at the cross. We all have to come to the cross to be forgiven of our sin, no matter how “small.”
When people say they are a good person according to God, they are essentially saying that they keep all his commandments, because that’s what God says is good. We can’t go by our version of good. We must go by His.
Some people will actually lie, and say that they have always kept God’s law. This isn’t what the bible claims. The bible specifically said the law was brought to men to show them their sin. Men should read the law and tremble, knowing they have sinned against God, unless they lie.
Galatians 3:19 says, “What is the use of the Law? It was given later to show that we sin. But it was only supposed to last until the coming of that descendant who was given the promise.”
When we measure our self to God’s standards, His perfection; unfailing love, we are bankrupt in comparison. There is nowhere else to turn, but only to admit we are broken sinners. Any less cry would be unrealistic, and a lie.
Ok, that’s the bad news. The good news is Jesus came, and paid the price we could never pay. God is a Just God, and won’t allow sin to go unpaid for. He can’t just change His character and allow sin to be swept under the rug. His son, Jesus, came to live the perfect life, sin free, that we could never live. He died in our place, paying for our sins. The bible says, if we believe in this, His account of living a perfect, sinless life is accredited to our account. Our bankrupt, spiritually dead “bank account” will have righteousness imputed into it by Jesus. This is why we need a savior. We are spiritually bankrupt without righteousness; and without Christ.
