Your Life in Pieces

In that day men will throw away to the rodents and bats their idols of silver and idols of gold, which they made to worship.
-Isaiah 2:20

Think of your life as a chess board. You constantly ponder your next move. You ask, “should I move my queen two places to the left or my king one place to the right?” We never really include God in our decision-making but wonder why things turn out the way they do. Suddenly, our chess board (our self-created life) falls to the ground, and every piece we strategically placed shatters in a million pieces.

Our first thought is, “God, why are you allowing this?” We watch all of our plans, desires, intensions, and gods (the things we put first in our lives) utterly destroyed. Our very first reaction is to blame God and ask Him why everything got taken away from us.

Once your life (here illustrated as a chess board) has been utterly destroyed, “fallen apart in a million pieces,” He can then redesign it the way Heaven intended.

…and the idols will totally disappear.
-Isaiah 2:18

Now, as the kings and queens we placed in particular areas of our lives, or as I like to call them “strange gods,” shatter, we cringe. We feel as if we are being broken, as if everything we ever knew or built for ourselves is being taken away.

“There goes MY biggest move!”

“There goes MY dream!”

“There goes MY marriage!”

“There go MY accomplishment!”

This can make people begin to resent God as “their life” is taken away. I can imagine the Father saying, “I am going to move that chess piece you served and adored out of the way, because I know what’s best.

“I am going to take that relationship out of your life, because unlike you, I see into the future, and I know in five years he’s going to leave you.

“I cancelled that career, because you were going to become a slave to it, and you would never know Me.

“I see far past the horizon, child. I know your future. I am protecting you. I’m destroying every ‘god’ you built in your life so you can know the True and Living God. I have a masterpiece I’m creating for you, child.

“Don’t settle for less than I created you to be. Don’t settle for someone who will love you less than I will.

“I want to be your first love. I want to be your God. Call on my name just once. What do you have to lose? Try me. Cast your cares upon me. You were never meant to carry them on your own. I hear you crying, ‘Lord fix this. Take it,’ yet you’re clinging for dear life to it. Let it go, and give it to me. You’re holding onto your life, and you’re losing it. I’ll take your life that’s falling apart and give you a new one. Do you trust me?”

This is what God did with my life.

It was scary at first. But now…. I never would have imagined how much better He was creating my life than I ever could. CLICK HERE for my story.
